Zombies in Area1 Run

Zombies in Area! Run
This isn't strictly from San Antonio, but Austin isn't very far away. When I first saw this in the news I thought it was a screenshot from a San antonio Transguide sign, and was all pissy that I had missed the opportunity to take a photo of it. I looked all over for it and finally found these news reports. Couldn't resist posting this image. It kind of reminds me of that whole War of the Worlds thing, although I didn't hear of anyone thinking it was the end of the world.

Train Yard Graffiti

train yard graffiti
Pass this by almost every day on the way to drop off the kids and to work. I know people who have done photo shoots in train yards but I never have. This is as close as I've come to if. Now I'm assuming this is a train yard. This shot is taken from the highway but they sure look like train cars to me.

Apartments on fire

This is a shot from the library of the San Pedro Manor apartment fire. I was certain that someone must've died, as quickly as this fire got out of control. Luckily, everyone escaped with no deaths and no major injuries.

Be One in a Million

be one in a million
The San Antonio Public Library System is trying to reach one million card users this year. Come on I dare you. If you don't have a card get one now. It's totally free all you need is something with your face and address on it. Your ID or Drivers License would be prefect...if you are a student bring in your school ID. I got my sister and her kids signed up. (That's three down, only a couple of 100,000 to go.)

Tree Ornaments

tree ornaments
Was across the street at the Southwest School of Arts & Craft and looked up and saw something I had not seen before. I saw these thingies up above. Not quite sure what they are but they sure drew my eye.

Happy Birthday Rich!

Cielo Vista

theatre exterior
Was dragged out kicking and screaming by the nieces to Cielo Vista to watch Underworld 3. We thought we had missed it but we were able to screech in and missed nothing but a few previews. It was an alright movie. The female lead went brunette as opposed to the blond she had been in the previous movies, but you can't have everything. The scene at the top of the cliff got my vertigo screaming like a girl too. :D

Author: Alexander Stadler

author signing
At the library today they had a Reading Fiesta to kick of the library's campaign to sign up a million card holders. There were author readings and signings and a book sale by Scholastic. There were anime/manga-ish events going on in Teen Services. There was character photos being taken, and even a beauty queen. Here the author Alexander Stadler is signing a copy of his book Julian Rodriguez. He signed the book "For Hunter who is so smart" and drew a fish and stars. He was even nice enough to make draw little animals specific to the person who asked for them.

Art at the Big K

art
Today was another one of our mostly monthy dinner/craft get togethers. Once again we patronized the Big Kahuna. What can I say we all love their food. They switch out their art pieces and this time they had these great pieces. I especially liked the red headed female with what looks like headphones on the upper left.

Wedding Shoot

wedding shoot
Caught the tail end of this at the end of the day. People get married at the Central Library or hold their receptions there. Across the street at the Southwest School of Art & Craft there is a church that people get married at also. Their grounds are really nice and you can usually see some kind of shoot going on there or on the River Walk right off of it too.

The World Has Changed

SA Express News Front Page
Front page of the local newspaper, The San Antonio Express-News. I'm sure many newspapers across the nation and the world look like this and will continue to look like this for a while. Our local newspaper lets you order front pages for pretty much any given day. I wonder how many people will order this one and others like it. I know people buy the ones with important dates like birthdays and anniversaries and such.

Lunch: Chicken Lo Mein

Lunch: Chicken Lo Mein
Lunch from the hospital menu. Every once in a while the hospital will get all foreign dishy on us. They've tried Mexican, Chinese, Gree, Cajun and more that I can't recall. Today was a Chinese food day. They had this and Chicken and Broccoli. I couldn't decide which one to get so I got one for lunch and one for dinner as I do often when I don't want to worry about what I will have for dinner.

Mini Cupcakes

mini cupcakes
Most people that know me, know that I don't/can't cook much. I can make simple things out of the box. Lately I've been making these mini cupcakes. they seem to go way faster than the bigger ones. I checked out a book from the library to learn how to make fancy ones, but as most things, it just seems to be more trouble than they are worth. I made these by request for one of my nieces birthdays. I made strawberry, lemon, and chocolate swirl. I envy the cupcakes I see at the Gucci HEB and in all those magazines and cupcakes, but I reckon as long as no one gets food poisoning I'm doing good.

Feeding Frenzy

feeding frenzy
Ah how I miss these arcade games. You can still find them around, here and there. this one is at Peter Piper's. I remember playing Centipede and a machine like this. I think this machine also has the trackball that Centipede had.

She's a Hottie

Sticker: She's a Hottie
Saw this sticker in a Target parking lot. I like the sticker. I also like the Scion xB. If I were to get a Scion it would be the other I think it's called the xA. I like to see the stickers that people decorate their cars, etc. with. I find it is much easier to take photos when both the car in question and I are stationary, as opposed to moving which is how I get most of my shots.

Good Neighbor Program

good neighbor program
I see these signs all over neighborhoods, but I'm not really sure what it means. Does it mean that there is some kind of formal neighborhood group keeping an eye on things? I like to think so.

Fight Club

Fight club
I've never been to this little park in downtown but it has some cool little features I'd like to check out. Right behind it there is a church that puts up a sphagetti dinner every year. (It might be the Knights of Christopher Columbus, but I'm not sure). What drew my eye for this pic was the group of boys, it looked like they were roughhousing a bit, but we were moving too quick to be sure. They could have been playing tackle football for all I know. :D

Museo Alameda

Alameda Museum
I've been wanting to go inside this museum since it first opened, but I have yet to be able to make that happen. I like the colors and the metal work. The closest I've gotten to it was for a Veterans Day parade whose route passed down the street.

It's the first formal affiliate of the Smithsonian outside of DC and is the offical State Latino museum.

Visit the website.

La Morenita Fruit Cups

La Morenita Fruit Cups
Here's this little place that sells fruit cups. I'm not sure if it is open to business, as I can't recall ever seeing it open, but most times, I'm assuming I past it by before it would open. La Morenita translates into little dark one (or little brunnette). It looks to have been a garage in the past.

Java Nook: Opening Jan. 17

Java Nook: Opening Jan.17
WooHoo! I can finally report an opening date: January 17, 2009. I mean to try me out some of their frozen drinks. I'll let you all know how they are. If you find yourself in dowtown anywhere near the Central Library, give the Java Nook a try.

Fox Tech Pictograph

Pictograph
I've gotten pics of this before but I've never been able to figure out what it says, well I finally solved it. While my sister was trying to figure out the new Compass bank ATM machine (she didn't like it, the old one was super loud, but very polite) I took another crack at it.

My solution: Here at Fox Tech we think that we can change the world!

L&M Bookstore

L&M Bookstore
Thankfully my school days are behind me, and I have no intention of going back anytime soon. I'm sure most college students have stepped foot in one of these stores at least once. I got all of my books back in the day at my school, but today we were here for my sister who is in grad school. They didn't have any of her books, which was surprising considering that the school she goes too is in downtown, not very far from here at all.

Hog Wild

Hog Wild
Back in April of 2007 when I posted a picture of Flip Side I promised to post a picture of Hog Wild if I ever got a halfway decent shot of it...well here it is my promise fulfilled. We pass this store almost daily. I don't know if I've ever been in it. If I ever step foot inside I hope I have my camera so I can get an interior shot.

Carouseling

Lady Godiva
Once again we were at Peter Piper's, nothing special this time, just getting the kids out of the house. I've been trying to get my nephews on this thing  but at least the two younger ones seemed afraid of it. My niece finally decided she wanted to get on it and there was my photo op.

In the past everytime we went to a carnival or a park the only ride I ever got on was the carousel. I've graduated a bit, but not by much.

Theme Day: Best Photo of 2008

in a half shell
This month's theme was the Best Photo of 2008. Now mind you I take many more photos than I actually post so I wasn't sure if it was best photo taken in 2008 or best photo blogged, but just to make sure I decided on doing a best photo blogged.

I chose this one, not because it's the best photo I've taken, but because I like the look of it. Again, it has nothing to do with how I took the picture but with the subject matter. I like the post and the antannae like things coming out of the head.
