Lunch at the Cove

Was treated to another birthday lunch by a coworker. We ate at the Cove which was new to me. I liked the burger I got and told No that I would endeavor to eat their with my sister next time she was in the are for lunch.

Care Package

I go on and on about my little brother because I haven't seen him much since high school. He joined the Marines right out of school and he doesn't get to come home on leave much. He's currently in Afghanistan and we bug him all the time to let us know what he needs/wants. We were surprised when he actually requested a few things, not for himself of course (we rely on his wife for that) but for his guys.

In this shipment we are sending a few things they need and some things they just would like to have. Thanks to everone who heard about this and wanted to help.

Gregory Alan Johnson Exhibit

I like to eat lunch at the Southwest Craft Center every once in a while because I get lunch, I get to talk to the nice lunch staff and I also get a chance to look at their current exhibit, look at their store and pick through whatever current crop of post cards they have. I liked the colors of this piece.

Gap Toothed Building

We pass by this building every once in a while and I think I've noticed the windows have always been closed. Today they were open and it made me wonder what was on that floor. Look closely at the pic and you'll see some spots. Rejoice for me and San Antonio, because yes indeed those are rain drops.

Lunch with Characters

Some of my co-workers took me to lunch for my birthday. I didn't suspect a thing of course being blissfully ignorant as I usually am. We went to Big Kahuna's. I ate with The King (G$), Pretty (S) and Handsome (A) as our waiter billed them. The King aka G$ paid for my birthday feast...Gracias G!

Today would have been my grandmother's 98th birthday...Happy Birthday Ama!

Red Wings Billboard

When I noticed this sign it made me think of my little brother. His first pair of boots came from the Red Wings store on Military. He was in high school when he saved up enough money to buy a $100 pair from working. A couple of years ago he was down here on leave and he decided to get another pair (if I'm not mistaken he still has the old pair). The man who was there was really nice and gave great customer service. He tried to look my brother up in the system but couldn't find him (I'm not surprised since it had been almost 15 years), but my brother walked out of there with a new pair of boots. Hell I almost want to get me a pair.

Big Red + Mountain Dew = Goodness

My coworkers used to fear me when I used to mix these drinks. They said I would bounce off the walls, but I never noticed anything. I was talking to some current co-workers and we mixed some up to taste. I like pretty much a half and half, maybe with a smidge more BR.

Men at Work

Not quite sure what was going on here, but when I see City Public Service truck I pay attention. I mean I need to know if we be losing power or something. The sudden onset of darkness is not a good thing.

I Heart the Library

Looked up into the sky and saw this right above the point of the Central Library in downtown. I thought it looked like a heart.

A Little Shady

Even kids now a days should worry about protecting themselves from the sun. I remember back when we were kids we would run around from almost sunrise to dark without worrying about sunscreen, much less sunglasses or umbrellas. I shudder to think what damage I did to my skin back then.

Egg in a Basket

My niece found out about Eggs in a Basket from Gods know where. She made them for me one day so I got bored one day and decided to try one out for myself. Not sure I did it the right way but it seemed to have come out okay. I think this is what they are called over seas. Don't really know what we call them here.

Bunny Eared Skull

Saw this skull on the back of this car and of course that drew my attention because I like skulls, but on closer inspection I noticed that a set of floppy bunny ears had been drawn into the dust/dirt of the rear car window right around the top of the skull.

Today would have been my dad and his twins 71st birthday. Happy Birthday you two!

Putting Up Their Dukes

We've seen a few photo shoots going on in front of this wall. These two guys were posing with fists up, so I figure they were boxers or possibly MMA guys. My sister and I both agreed that the guy in the red was scarier/meaner looking, but we figured that might have to do with the color he was wearing.

Yellow Cars All in a Row

Not sure what's going on with these cool yellow cars but this was not the first time I saw them parked on this lot. I figured it was some car group or something. Previously I saw people milling about, get in and drive them all out.

Finally Some Rain

What's with this picture...well heck look closely that's moisture. Lately even cloud cover tends to over excite the population with the possiblity of rain.

Boom Go the Clowns

Saw this on College street I think. The sign on the side of the rocket thing says El Riad Clowns. They were parked in the loading zone of a local hotel. Didn't see any clowns though.

Ross Tubes

Went to Ross today and saw these strange tubes inside. Apparently someone had stolen the airconditioning from their roof (how I have no idea), so they bought in this generator truck thingie that was pumping in cooler air into the store.

Fourthly Fireworks

Went to my older brothers today but came home in time to see the firework show, well two shows. A number of people in the neighborhood sit outside to watch the Sea World and the Hyatt Regency firework shows. This one was from Sea World.

Feet and Eggs

We were at a local flea market looking for some bandana's to send to my brother in Afghanistan (apparently it's hot and sandy over there) when I spotted these oldie but goodies. My dad used to eat pigs feet all the time when we were younger. I don't think he ever ate pickled eggs, but I wouldn't doubt if he did.

Beach Reads

I'm always looking for something to read and I love to see what kind of displays the library will put up every month. I don't much like the beach...too hot and too sandy, but I'll give these reads a shot.

Theme Day: Empty

This month's theme day was all about empty. I saw this cute little pink scooter just all by its lonesome and couldn't resist. It's empty awaiting a rider.

The new Camaro

I saw this new Z/28 in the parking lot of Bill Miller Bar-B-Q the other day. Nice.

Recycling Life

I gave blood today. I try to give when I can, but usually my iron count gets me out of it. This time I got in, but they had to poke me twice, and I had just had blood drawn about a week before this. By the end of this day I was feeling a bit like a pincushion but I reckon the people that end up receiving it don't mind a bit, and I didn't mind (too much) either.

Rhine Cones

They've been selling these right outside our local H.E.B. I've only tried two flavors: cherry and a coconut I think. I much preferred the cherry and only ordered the coconut because my sister wanted it. Before they were here this spot was used to sell Kettle corn. I've only bought Kettle corn twice, once for my niece and once for myself when I found I liked it, but before that I always bypassed the Kettle corn and went for the sour pickles and chinese candies. The only thing I don't much like about these places is you need cash and I hardly ever have cash on me. HEB has an ATM in it and if I remember I try to hit it before we leave so that I can get a cone or a pickle. I don't know if it's the heat or just how good these things are but there is also usually a line.

Esperanza Springs Eternal

The name of this plant translates into hope. I see them sprouting up all over San Antonio, when everything else is giving in to the heat, so I guess it does spring eternal.

Dusky Neighborhood

Driving home I spot the crescent moon up above in the sky, barely visible in this shot of a neighborhood getting ready for the fall of night.

Finger Lickin' Good

This was one of the displays at Tar-jet. I love the Stephanie Plum series by Janet Evanovich. The shelves had some empty spots and were not quite in order, so I fixed that. I used to work retail back in the day, so I just can't seem to help myself from straightening up as I shop.

Still Hanging On

Even with the drought we are growing through you still see some of the colorful vegetation hanging around. As the summer progresses though I'm sure things will begin to get a little brown around the edges.

Street Art

Saw the cover of this book and it reminded me of all the street art/graffiti I see while out and about. I wish more of it were like this instead of just the "I was here" kind of scrawls I see.

Timeless Alley

Sometimes when I'm on walkabout taking pics I think about how what I am looking at could be a scene from years in the past. This one made me think that with the fire escapes and the smoke stack and really no evidence of anything too modern.

Shoes

I find myself looking down and checking out shoes quite often, and I guess I'm not the only one. Whenever I wear these shoes people always comment on them. I like them cause they are slip on and comfortable, just wish I could swap out the stripes to match every outfit and I'd wear them ever day.

Bird Watching

Spotted this black bird in the hospitals lawn. I want to say it's a crow, but I really have no idea. I just know it's not a pigeon.

Spot the Photog

I never really used to see photographs or if I did I never much paid them any mind. Now that I am only one of many "I see photo taking people". This one was on top of the library's garage in downtown.

Light Hole

Saw this hole punched in the clouds by this ray of light on the way in to work. Sure packed a punch. :D

Parking Shack

This is one of those pay to park lots in dowtown. I always wonder how someone works all day in that little building. In the background of the picture you can see a motorcyle police escorting a funeral.

Fixer Upper

Not sure if this was an old Frost Bros building or if the wall was used for adverstising for it. Currently it is a Spectrum Fitness club. Not sure quite what the guys were up to on that roof, but I like the colors of the building.

Don't Make Me Choose Between You and My Shoes

Saw this book at Target I think. I love the boots and just the cover and the title. I've always wanted to get me a pair of boots and hat before I die. People find out I'm from Texas and they always ask if I have a horse and/or an accent. I always answer no to both. These boots remind me of those fancy boots that Fiesta royalty wear on the floats, and recently I saw that Sandra Cisneros owns a pair too.

Two Hats

Saw these two gentlemen as I was walking to find something to eat. I don't think they were together, but I liked the two hats next to each other. The other man in front of them had a cap, not a hat, but I also liked the triangle that is formed by them.

SAFD Training Donation

I was wondering what these train cars were doing at the San Antonio Fire Academy. Heard on the news later that it was a donation to the San Antonio Fire Department by Union Pacific. I think I saw two cars.

Something Wicked This Way Comes

Saw this while on a walk about in downtown. Wicked played at the Majestic Theater. I haven't seen this, but I wouldn't mind reading the book.

Guillermo's New Location

Went to the new location of Guillermo's, before it used to be at the old YMCA in downtown.Didn't really know what to order, but an order passed me by--a hamburger and it looked so good that I ordered it. I would recommend the burger for anyone. I really like the bread they use, I would eat that just by itself. Myself and one of the girls I was with wondered what the deal was with the Native American art. If anyone knows let me know.

Spectrum Health Miles

Saw this truck in the parking lot of Baptist in downtown. This sucker is covered head to toe in the all over advertisement. Spectrum is a local gym, not very far from Baptist. Not sure how many locations there are though.

Operation Care Drop

Was at HEB the other day and as I checked out I noticed they had this little package put tother in a zip lock. I went ahead and paid for one and was directed to place it in this box by the bank. For the troops I'll do just about anything.

St. Agnes Ladies

St. Agnes on the West Side had a spaghetti plate sale and as we were waiting for our plates I saw these women walking out with theirs. I like how they go from tallest to shortest from left to right. It kind of reminds me of that cell phone commercial that uses all sorts of things to stand for the number of sticks their customers get on their service.

Burn Ban Lifted

Once again we were in Floresville and noticed many a person burning leaves, fallen trees, brush and such. I know a Burn Ban had been in effect for a while, but I reckon it was lifted else so many would not be burning so copiously. It's funny how most people follow the rules, even if they kvetch about them endlessly.

Museum Reach Lock

Finally had a chance to walk down the new stretch of the River Walk being called "The Museum Reach". I only went as far as the locks over my lunch hour. I was able to see a river barge go through, even got some video of it. I haven't gone all the way to the Museum but I heard there's a Famer's Market by the Pearl Brewery and the fish that glow at night under the bridge are further up too.

They have some nice little resting spots, art and flowers to get a gander at while you stroll on by.

Fire Apparatus

Wave hello/goodby to the people of SAFD. Don't know if tehy are coming or going, but either way they are appreciated. Now if only they would do something for me and shoot a calendar like all those other cities do. *grrr*

Free Rootbeer Float Day

For some reason Sonic's declared a Free Rootbeer Day. How could I have forgotten? We stopped to pick up some food for the kiddos after we did some shopping and the girl worker asked if we wanted some free floats. We were all like huh? and then the light went off in my brain and we were like sure. They tried to offload five of them off on us, one for each of the occupants in the car, but we stopped them at two.

Overhead Signs

Here's a shot of a complete overhead highway sign. The ones that first made me think of those alien Star Trek feelers. Not sure if it's just me but don't those suckers look just a smidge low. I think about all those trucks that have been getting stuck under overpasses and wonder if they will now get stuck under these signs or knock them down into traffic.

Theme Day: Feet

The theme this month is feet. I was hoping for some kind of measurement shot, but luckily I like to take shots of my feet in new shoes. These are my newest aquisitions. I wore them for the first time and my feet were killing me by the end of the day. One of these days I too will learn to break shoes in before wearing them for the first time.
