Flooding?

This flooding bypass channel marks the break between the scenic side of the riverwalk and the side of the riverwalk with bars and restaurants (the touristy side). San Antonio is prone to floods, but supposedly with these channels, the safest place to be in a flood is in the middle of downtown!

Green and Guitars

I took this photo today along the riverwalk. The green turned out so vibrant, and can you see the guitar railing in the background? They adorn the Hard Rock Cafe restaurant.

Support our Highways

San Antonio has been building highways for as long as I can remember. This is one support of a highway that hasn't gone up yet. It's kind of scary too me that all that supports all that weight or these flimsy little things.

Homewood Suites

This is a hotel in downtown. It's fairly new, located across the old location of the Main Library, which is now the International Center. I like the shadows cast by the iron balconies on the brick wall.

Police Station

I love this old police station downtown San Antonio. I had to go and visit today to get my fingerprints taken for my new job!

These Shoes Were Made for Walking

These shoes can be found in front of a club on St. Mary's St. I think. I was walking back from a meeting with a man named Igor in a beautiful building and decided to walk back to work. When I came across these babies I was glad I did.

Layabouts

I took this the other day at the San Antonio Zoo. When I looked at it on camera I t hought, Well Hell, this could be a view from another planet...or Australia. :D

P31

I know Thiên just posted a photo from Taste of Asia, but since I love the place so much I thought I'd post my favorite dish from there. It's number is P31 and it's sauted pork slices with prawns served over vermicelli noodles and some greens underneath. I love to eat this with some fish sauce. I usually also order some spring rolls to share an egg drop soup and some limonade. Oh and after years of not being able to—from one day to the next—I went from being hopeless with chopsticks, to being able to eat this dish with them.

Boo hoo

picture 145

We went out to our favorite Vietnamese/Chinese restaurant for lunch today. It's known as Taste of Asia (Chinese side), Pho Cong Ly (Viet. side) and the Noodle House (our nickname for the place).

It's our last day in the office for the three of us ER girls. That's Electronic Resources, not Emergency Room. Our department at the library has been eliminated so the good times in this office are over. Sarah and Sonia are being shipped out to the branch libraries and I will remain here at the main library. I sure am going to miss the girls. Sigh, at least Shorty is still here with me.

Walk / Don't Walk

Paris DP posted photos of his Walk/Don't Walk signage , so I thought I'd post mine. The red hand means stop. Recently they also added a countdown. It counts down from 10, but according to my calculations you have another 6 seconds before the light turns green.

The little white man means walk..and really fast too, because downtown traffic is so unpredictable. In the background you can see the Payroll Association building reflecting the library from it's bank of windows. You can also see the yellow/orange vehicle with advertising on it's side—I'm seeing this kind of stuff all over the place now.

Tattoo

I love getting a look at people's tattoos. This guy is an elevator technician—hence the tools in his back pocket. He and his co-worker are pretty good about getting the elevators working. One of these days I'll have to ask to take a better pic of his tattoos.

Clouds Sduolc

I don't know what building this is, but I love it. It's in the north eastern part of San Antonio, out of downtown, and either past or before the airport.

Paper Mache

I love this billboard. I've been trying to get a pic of it for ages. I'm just glad they've kept it up long enough for me to snap it. It's right off the highway—281, 35 or 37 one of those. The girls would probably be able to tell you. :D

San Fernando

picture 600

This shot is for Shorty since her Mall Church photo was on my mind. This is San Fernando Cathedral, located downtown about 6 or 7 blocks from us at the library. I pass it coming and going to work and I always enjoy looking at it. This morning I decided to loop around to try and find a good distant shot. We'll venture in sometime soon. Many events are held here and it is beautifully lighted during the holiday season.

Radio Towers

You can see these radio towers in a number of places in downtown. These are for one of our local tv stations I think. The golden domes are from the Municipal Auditorium, where many of the local schools graduated from. I think I walked their stage when I graduated from college.

Sunrise

I took this pic on the way in to work. I can't quite recall on what part of the journey it was, but it doesn't really matter. I love sunrises and sunsets.

Mall Church

This church is located right smack in the middle of RiverCenter Mall. When the mall was built they wanted the church space too, but they refused to move, so RiverCenter Mall was built around it.

Cloudy Skies...Finally

We finally got some rain! After a blazing month in August (THE hottest in the record books for SA, Sarah and I found this so discouraging), the tempuratures are more tolerable in the upper 80s and lower 90s. Best of all, we are finally rejuvenating our countryside with much needed rainfall. Cloudy skies never looked so great.

This is a shot of our downtown as you approach from the westside. I was at a branch library for a class observation and really liked the look. That's part of the downtown campus on the right (Univ. of TX at SA) and a colorful building on the left is a popular restaurant, Pica de Gallo.

Have a great day everyone.

9/11 Reflections

This was the view out my window on September 11, 2001—minus the clouds maybe. These are in no way the size of the twin towers, but that day and even today these two buildings bring to mind the other two.

Milam Diner

I love this place. It's located it downtown San Antonio on the ground floor of the Milam Building. It reminds me of an old time restaurant. They have these great booths with metallic red plastic seats.

Also their food is as close to home cooked as I've ever tasted. I would go here daily if they could keep their turkey burger in stock.

I remember back in the days of 90210 my sister always wished she could find a place to hang out like the Peach Pit, well this place might qualify.

Tin Work

I saw this in a window of a downtown gallery as I was walking back from being hijacked by a trolley. Of course the colors caught my eye, but also it reminded me that Dia de los Muertos is coming up in November. That's when you see a lot of these calaveras popping up.

Jellyfish Clouds

Walking in downtown I looked up and saw these clouds. Now the first thing that came to mind was jellyfish. Of course this could be because my nephew watches Spongebob almost exclusively now.

Flags on High

For those of you all that have been visiting this blog for a while, you must realize that I have this thing for flags and reflections. Well this photo took care of both of my fixations. I'm not sure what building this is, except it's probably some office/bank being as it's in downtown. I wish the color of the sky had come through better—it was this brilliant blue.

Libro Walks the Line

They had a press conference at the Central Library today. There was three mascots attending that day: Libro the Lion whom you see walking the line, Curious George, who I don't think had gotten there yet in this picture, and some frog who is out of the frame.

I had to laugh at Libro's antics. He was balancing on one leg, pretending to be the speaker, and then this. It reminds me of when the police make you walk a straight line to see if you are drunk. Not that I know from personal experience mind you, but I've seen enough cops on tv.

Houston Street Piazza

Houston Street in downtown San Antonio is experiencing a revitalization. I like this little spot of tranquility. The iron work is pretty cool, but in the background, between the two columns is a fountain that lends a bit of a zen quality to this little oasis.

Grab the Bull by the Horn

The red building in the background is the Buckhorn Saloon. They have all sorts of memorabilia in there, along with bulls heads along the roof line. They also have pressed pennies machines, which is the reason I traipsed in there one day.

Stand and Deliver

This is a statue of Losoya located across the street from the Hyatt in downtown where our very own Sarah had her wedding reception a few years back now. Sarah actually got married in the building that you can't see but where the gun is pointing. Behind the statue is a piece of the RiverWalk and of course that plant covered building that is kind of creepy.

I Heart the Moon

Here's a pic of our very own moon, Luna. My sister made me come out and look at it. I was like what's so special about it tonight beyond the ring and clouds around it. I don't know what she saw, but after I took this pic, I realized that the moon was looking heart-shaped that night—too bad it wasn't Valentine's.

I pooted

I drive by this billboard once a month on my way to class. It still cracks me up.
